Through the Lens of Courage: YPN’s Journey to Expose the Scars of Child Marriage

A Photographic Odyssey of Emotion and Truth

The studio lights dimmed, but the weight of the moment burned bright. For Yemen Production Network (YPN), the photography session for UNFPA’s campaign against child marriage was not merely a project—it was a visceral confrontation with reality. As the camera focused on the young girl, her eyes reflecting a storm of innocence and fear, and the young man whose presence symbolized a forced adulthood, the team grappled with an unsettling truth: these frames were not fiction. “Every click of the shutter felt like a scream,” recalls YPN’s photographer – Arwa Ahmed. The child actress, selected for her haunting authenticity, became a mirror to thousands of girls across Yemen and beyond. Behind the scenes, the crew navigated waves of emotion—anger, sorrow, resolve. The challenge was not just technical but moral: How does one artistically capture such trauma without exploiting it? The answer lay in collaboration. Workshops with UNFPA ensured sensitivity, while the actors’ raw performances turned statistics into stories. The result? A series of images that do not just *show* but *haunt*.

Trust Earned: UNFPA’s Partnership with YPN

When UNFPA entrusted YPN with this campaign, it was a testament to years of integrity. As a Yemeni media company, YPN’s roots in the region’s cultural fabric give it an unmatched ability to navigate delicate narratives. “We don’t just *tell* stories; we *live* them,” says Moohi, CEO of YPN. This project demanded more than technical skill—it required guardianship of the victims’ dignity. UNFPA’s choice to partner with YPN underscores a shared mission: to amplify marginalized voices through art that resonates globally. From scripting to post-production, YPN’s commitment to authenticity ensured the campaign avoided sensationalism, instead striking a balance between urgency and empathy. As one UNFPA representative – Nahema Patwari- noted, “The products YPN delivered despite the current conditions in Yemen and the project’s tight timeline are truly remarkable and their impact on the campaign immeasurable”

The Humanitarian Heartbeat: Why This Campaign Matters

Child marriage is not a “cultural practice”—it is a crisis. In Yemen, where conflict and poverty collide, 32% of girls are married before 18, their futures truncated by tradition and survival. This campaign is a lifeline, transforming silence into action. The photographs are more than visuals; they are catalysts. By humanizing the data, YPN and UNFPA force viewers to confront uncomfortable questions: *What if this were my sister? My daughter?* The campaign’s power lies in its duality: it wounds to heal, shocks to mobilize. For YPN, the humanitarian imperative is personal. “Every girl in these images represents a Yemeni child,” says Moohi. “This is our fight as much as theirs.”

The Unforgettable: Linking Art to Action

The UNFPA article “[An Unforgettable Day](https://www.unfpa.org/an-unforgettable-day)” chronicles a similar journey—a girl’s wedding day, stripped of joy, replaced with dread. YPN’s work echoes this narrative. The article’s haunting account of a 14-year-old’s forced marriage parallels the visual metaphors in YPN’s campaign: the girl’s dress stained with shadows, the groom’s grip on her wrist, the absence of laughter. Both pieces weaponize storytelling to dismantle apathy. The UNFPA article’s closing call to action—“Her future cannot wait”—is mirrored in YPN’s closing frame: the girl’s hand reaching toward a blurred horizon, a plea for intervention. Together, they form a chorus of urgency, proving that art and activism are inseparable.

Framing Hope in the Darkness

YPN’s collaboration with UNFPA is more than a campaign—it’s a covenant. A promise to wield creativity as a tool for justice, to turn lenses into lifelines. As the images circulate globally, they carry Yemen’s cry to the world: *See us. Hear us. Save us.* For YPN, this project is a milestone, but the road ahead is long. “We will keep filming, keep shouting,” Moohi vows. “Until every girl’s ‘unforgettable day’ is not her wedding, but her graduation.”

Celebrating the Success of "Seeds of Hope": A YPN Milestone

At YPN, we believe in the power of storytelling to inspire change, uplift communities, and showcase resilience. Our recent collaboration with IOM Yemen on the “Seeds of Hope” project is a testament to this belief, and we’re thrilled to share the journey of bringing it to life.

The Heart of the Story: Developing Sara, Aisha, and Dewit

The foundation of “Seeds of Hope” was built on three compelling characters: Sara, Aisha, and Dewit. Each of their stories was carefully crafted to represent the struggles and triumphs of individuals facing displacement and hardship. From the beginning, our creative team worked closely with IOM Yemen to develop these characters, ensuring they authentically reflected the lived experiences of the communities they represent.

Sara’s narrative showcased the dedication of an IOM humanitarian worker who stands by displaced individuals and communities, providing unwavering support and hope in challenging times. Aisha embodied the spirit of innovation, demonstrating how determination and support can lead to empowerment. Dewit’s journey highlighted the challenges of migration from Ethiopia to Yemen, finding himself in a displacement camp, where his perseverance and leadership became a beacon of hope for others. These primary characters, supported by a cast of secondary figures, painted a vivid and relatable picture of resilience and strength.

Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Visual Story

Our team at YPN poured their hearts into every stage of production. From storyboarding to filming, we were committed to capturing the essence of each story. The landscapes of Yemen served as both a backdrop and a character, reflecting the challenges and beauty of the journey. Our cinematographers used creative techniques to highlight moments of transformation and perseverance, emphasizing the tangible impact of humanitarian efforts.

Engaging the Audience: Building Connection Through Visuals

To make the stories resonate, we employed a blend of cinematic storytelling and human-centered narratives. The use of vibrant colors and dynamic visuals brought the landscapes to life, while close-up shots of hands rebuilding lives or children smiling told stories of hope and perseverance. Our goal was to immerse the audience in the lives of these individuals, making their challenges and victories deeply relatable.

The Final Touch: Publishing and Positive Reception

After months of dedication and teamwork, the five episodes of “Seeds of Hope” were successfully published. The response was overwhelming—our partners at IOM Yemen shared positive feedback, emphasizing how the project captured the essence of their mission and the resilience of the communities they serve. The episodes sparked conversations and brought much-needed attention to the critical role of storytelling in highlighting displacement and the power of perseverance.

A Celebration of Collaboration

This project is a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and creativity. We are incredibly proud of our team at YPN for their hard work and passion, and we are grateful to IOM Yemen for trusting us to tell these powerful stories. Together, we’ve not only highlighted the strength of displaced communities but also reinforced the importance of storytelling as a tool for change.

As we reflect on the success of “Seeds of Hope”, we remain committed to amplifying voices that need to be heard and creating content that inspires action. Here’s to many more stories that foster hope and resilience.

Leading Campaign to Outstanding Success!

YPN Leads “Climate Change and Health” Campaign to Outstanding Success!

We at YPN are thrilled to share the success story of the “Climate Change and Health” campaign, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about the impact of climate change on public health. Sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), the campaign ran from August 15 to September 29, reaching hundreds of thousands across Yemen.

From the very beginning, we knew this campaign would be special. Our creative team designed an eye-catching identity and managed a dedicated Facebook page that served as the hub for engaging content, daily weather updates, and practical tips to protect against the effects of climate change. We made it our mission to inform and inspire, creating 92 posts that included videos, infographics, and podcast episodes.

What Made This Campaign Stand Out?

The heart of this campaign was the diversity of content. Whether it was videos explaining the direct health impacts of climate change or user-generated stories about personal experiences, every post struck a chord with our audience. The podcast series, in particular, was a highlight. By featuring experts who discussed how rising temperatures and changing weather patterns are affecting communities, the series sparked meaningful conversations about the importance of adaptation.

Our efforts didn’t stop at information-sharing; we made it personal. YPN’s dedicated team ensured the content was relatable and accessible, appealing to both the young and old. This led to impressive engagement stats: over 565,000 Facebook users were reached, with more than 14,000 interactions, including comments, shares, and likes.

Audience Interaction: A Key to Success

The enthusiasm from the audience was palpable. From Sana’a to Taiz, people from all walks of life engaged with the content. While 86% of the interactions came from men, the 25-34 age group was the most active, highlighting the campaign’s strong appeal to younger demographics.

Overcoming Challenges

Like any campaign, this one faced its own set of challenges. Misinformation, algorithm visibility, and Facebook’s ad restrictions were some hurdles. But with strategic adjustments, our team overcame these barriers, continuously adapting to ensure the campaign reached as many people as possible.

The Impact of Social Media

One of the biggest takeaways from this experience is how powerful social media can be in driving awareness and action. Compared to traditional media, the “Climate Change and Health” campaign achieved superior engagement and outreach. The results demonstrate that with the right strategy, social media can be a vital tool in promoting public health.

At YPN, we are incredibly proud of our team’s hard work and dedication. The success of this campaign has not only highlighted the importance of climate change awareness but has also showcased our expertise in leading impactful digital campaigns.

We are excited about what’s next—stay tuned for future initiatives, because we’re not stopping here! 🌍✨

Bridging Hope and Humanity

Through the Lens of Hope
A Testament to Professionalism and Trust

In the midst of Yemen’s ongoing conflict, humanitarian aid has become a lifeline for countless vulnerable families. Among the many international efforts, the Republic of Korea’s generous donation of 13,000 metric tons of rice to the World Food Programme (WFP) stands out as a significant contribution to alleviating hunger in the region. This rice is distributed to families in need as part of WFP’s general food assistance programme. Behind the scenes, capturing and broadcasting these impactful moments to the world is YPN, a media production company that has earned the trust and respect of the United Nations (UN) and its agencies, including WFP.

Since the summer of 2020, YPN has taken on the privilege of covering this annual event with unmatched professionalism. Our media crews utilize the latest technology, both on land and in the air, to ensure comprehensive coverage that reflects the magnitude of this aid and the broader humanitarian response. This article aims to highlight YPN’s vital role during the conflict and the profound trust we have garnered from the UN to execute our responsibilities with excellence.

A Strong and Professional Partnership with WFP: Our collaboration with WFP is rooted in a strong and professional partnership. From the onset, YPN has committed to ensuring smooth media coverage of the rice distribution events. Our teams work closely with WFP communication staff, aligning our strategies and goals to produce compelling and accurate representations of the aid efforts. This collaboration is not just about filming and photographing; it is about telling the stories of those who benefit from the aid, showcasing the logistical efforts involved, and highlighting the dedication of all parties working to make a difference.

The trust WFP places in YPN is a testament to our consistency in delivering high-quality media productions. Our crews are well-versed in operating in challenging environments, ensuring that each shot, interview, and narrative aligns with the humanitarian message and the overarching goals of the UN’s mission in Yemen.

Utilizing the Latest Technology: At YPN, we understand the power of technology in telling compelling stories. Our investment in the latest media technologies enables us to capture every detail of the aid distribution events. From high-resolution cameras to advanced drones, our equipment ensures that no aspect of the humanitarian efforts goes unnoticed. This technological edge allows us to produce visually stunning and emotionally engaging content that resonates with global audiences.

Our drone footage, in particular, provides a unique perspective on the scale of the operations. It captures the vast landscapes of Yemen, the bustling activity of distribution centers, and the lines of families receiving their much-needed aid. This bird’s-eye view adds a layer of depth to our storytelling, highlighting the coordination and effort involved in these massive humanitarian undertakings.

Reflecting the Humanitarian Response: The role of YPN goes beyond mere documentation. We see ourselves as storytellers with a responsibility to reflect the humanitarian response in the way it should be seen. Our coverage aims to humanize the statistics, putting faces to the numbers and sharing the experiences of those affected by the conflict. By doing so, we not only inform but also inspire and mobilize support from the international community.

Our professional approach ensures that the dignity and privacy of the aid recipients are always respected. We work sensitively and thoughtfully, aware of the challenging circumstances many of these families face. This respect and empathy are at the core of our operations, guiding how we interact with communities and shape our narratives.

Building Trust with the UN: The trust YPN has obtained from the UN and its various agencies is built on a foundation of reliability, excellence, and mutual respect. Our consistent performance, attention to detail, and adherence to ethical standards have established YPN as a trusted partner in media production. We are proud of the role we play in supporting the UN’s mission in Yemen and are committed to continuing this partnership with the same level of professionalism and dedication.

In conclusion, YPN’s involvement in covering the Republic of Korea’s rice donation to WFP is a reflection of our broader commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in Yemen. Our professional partnership with WFP, use of advanced technology, and dedication to telling the true stories of the humanitarian response have solidified our reputation as a reliable and trusted media production company. As we continue to navigate the complexities of the conflict, YPN remains steadfast in our mission to highlight the critical aid efforts and the resilience of the Yemeni people.
